Organizing Deep Dive – Sleep & Productivity

How getting better sleep improves productivity

Creating a clutter-free environment is challenging. Despite your best intentions, you may find yourself overcome with doubt, anxiety, or simply not knowing where to begin. To help you face those challenges, we have created Perfectly Placed’s Organizing Deep Dive.

As a professional organizer, I have been helping people declutter and design beautiful spaces since 2005. My husband, Travis, has been providing counseling services to clients since 2003. Now, for the first time, we have combined our specialties and take a “deeper dive” into the mental and emotional aspects of organizing your life!

Sleep & Productivity

Living with clutter take a drain on your productivity. Getting poor quality sleep does the same thing. Dr. Matthew Walker, professor of neuroscience at the University of California, Berkeley and author of Why We Sleep; Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams, says that getting a good night sleep is the single most important thing we can do for our physical and mental health.

Research shows that we need 7.5-9 hours of sleep each night but that many Americans are getting less than that. In fact, the World Health Organization has said that industrialized nations are experiencing a sleep epidemic. One study Dr. Walker discussed in his book revealed that 97% of teenagers are not getting enough sleep. When we don’t get enough sleep, our brains are compromised and we are not able to be as productive, creative, organized, and relationally connected as we would be with better sleep.

Sleep dramatically improves performance. In this video Travis shares some fasicnating statistics that demonstrated this as it related to NBA players’ performance. One example is that if players got more than 8 hours of sleep on a regular basis, their free-throw shooting improved by nearly 10%!

Believe it or not, another thing you can do to improve your sleep is to clean up that bedroom. Trying to sleep in a cluttered room negatively impacts your ability to fall asleep and get quality sleep as your brain is distracted by all of the things taking up the mental and physical space in your bedroom.
