5 Ways to Use Your Lazy Susan

by Susan Stewart | July 12, 2016

Ahh, the lazy Susan…a beloved friend. If only it had a better name. I just hate the association of my name with the word lazy. In stores they are often called turntables so let’s just call them that from here on out. Turntables are a great tool that can be used in a variety of ways for organization. Here are some ideas for how to use them when organizing your home.

1. Spices. This is my favorite way to use them and probably the most common. You can alphabetize your spices and place them along the perimeter of the turntable. I use 4 turntables to house my spices and it is simply glorious to never have to search for a spice. Hint: Ten inch turntables fit well in standard upper cabinets.

2. Vinegars & Oils. It’s a pain to be digging in a cabinet for the right vinegar, oil or sauce. The one you need is always in the back. Using a turntable makes it easy to find the one you need. These go well in the cabinet above your stove or in the corner of a walk in pantry. Hint: Ten or twenty inch turntables work well in the corners of pantries.

3. Condiments in the fridge. You may have never thought of it but turntables work well in a fridge. I use one in my fridge to hold small condiments such as jarred garlic and ginger & lemon and lime juice. I have another that stores cream cheese and sour cream. Turntables keep these small items from getting lost in the back of the fridge. Hint: Ten inch turntables work best in refrigerators.

4. Spray paint. I have a shelving unit in my basement that stores all of my paint and painting supplies. My spray paints are on a turntable, making just the right paint easy for me to locate. They look so lovely on that shelving unit, they practically call out to me to find something to paint. Hint: I use ten inch turntables for this purpose.

5. Hair products or cleaning supplies in the bathroom. I’ve used them for either in lower bathroom cabinets or the linen closet for my clients. Remember that turntables are about making it easy to grab what you need and to keep things from getting lost in the back of a deep closet or cabinet. Just make sure what you are storing will not tip over easily when you spin the turntable. Hint: Any size turntable could work here.
