How to Make Your Own Perfect Creative Space

Guest post by Cloe Matheson

Every creative person needs a space where they can brainstorm ideas, work on their skills, and expand their imagination. Whether you are a professional or a keen hobbyist, the value of a dedicated area to do your best work cannot be underestimated. The following tips can help you create an inspiring space to maximize your productivity.

Small Change, Big Difference

Even if you can’t afford a complete overhaul of your space, you can always make small changes to get the most out of your working environment. Color theory posits that different hues can affect our thoughts and emotions. Yellow and orange are colors associated with lively creativity, whereas green is the color of harmonious growth. Blue is considered peaceful and logical, and purple stimulates imagination and intuition. Red might be one to avoid if you’re aiming for a calm creative space, as it is the color of fiery passion!

Which color gets your creative juices flowing? Consider creating a brightly-colored feature wall using paint or a stylish wallpaper. Even just a framed print or some soft furnishings in bright fabrics can inject some vibrant joy into your space.

Making Space

If you don’t already have a designated workspace in your house, think about where you could fit one. Could your garage or attic transform from a chaotic storage dump into a functional studio? Depending on your requirements, you might not need a whole room: where could you rearrange some furniture to make space for a desk? If you’re really short on space, a desk that folds to store flush against the wall could be a great option.  With a folding room divider to give you a sense of privacy, along with noise-cancelling headphones, you can almost forget that anybody else is around!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Maybe you’re set on building a workspace separate to your house, perhaps in a back garden or yard. If this is the case, have you considered repurposing a steel shipping container? As well as being environmentally friendly, reusing a shipping container is affordable compared to building a whole new room and is durable, with the convenience of a ready-made container that you can customize as desired. This way, you can avoid much of the effort and expense of building a structure from the ground up, and can feel good about your environmental impact in the process!

Passion Projects

Derived from Latin, the word “inspire” literally means “to breathe into”, that is, to impart a truth or idea to someone. Your environment can be a key factor in getting you inspired to produce great work.

What inspires you?  Do you need a minimalist space with only the bare essentials on show? Or is your enthusiasm piqued by being surrounded with all the things you love? Consider all your senses: are there images that ignite your passion? A few carefully chosen framed pictures could enliven your space. Lighting is also important: perhaps you need bright or natural light for visual work. Or maybe lower lighting put you in a more imaginative mood – consider experimenting with differently colored lights, depending on how you feel.

What about sounds? An inspirational podcast or upbeat music might be just the ticket. Or perhaps you are stimulated by scent: a fragranced candle or essential oil diffuser could put you in a focused mood. Everyone’s individual needs vary, but ideally you want to strike a balance between comfort and energetic momentum. Find what puts you at ease and in the optimum frame of mind to do what you do best.

Happy creating!
