Master Bedroom Makeover

Susan Stewart, St. Louis Professional Organizer | May 14, 2018

Springtime seems to get me in the mood for new things. Once the weather gets nice and I start planting flowers, my makeover mood plows full force ahead. Since my master bedroom had been feeling a little dated, that became the space in which to focus. Inspired by Chip & Joanna Gaines and their show Fixer Upper, my Master Bedroom Makeover vision was to make a light and airy room with rustic elements and country charm. Simplicity and serenity were the feeling I wanted to create for this room. A place to rest….. Maybe you need a place like this too. If so, keep reading to find out how I was able to do it for under $1500.

The first step of my master makeover was to choose a paint color. This wasn’t a difficult process for me but if you have trouble choosing paint colors, I recommend that you buy 3 or 4 samples and paint them on the wall. Live with them for a few days to see how they look in different lighting and see which one you are the most drawn to. This process will save you time, money and aggravation. I chose to paint the room a soft robin’s egg blue for a calming affect.

Next I had to tackle a problem. Our master bedroom is HUGE. I know…. what a problem to have, right? Well, when your bed is pretty tiny in a room that big, it sort of looks out of place. So, channeling my inner Chip Gaines, my idea was to build a reclaimed wood headboard. I wanted it to be oversized so it would extend over the bed and the night stands thereby allowing the bed to become the focal point on the longest wall. I honestly had no idea where I was going to get the wood from. I just knew that on Fixer Upper, they always use reclaimed wood.

One bright Sunday afternoon my husband and I were driving home from church and we saw an old wooden fence sitting by the curb for the trash collectors. We quickly turned the car around, threw it in the car and brought it home. This could become all or part of the headboard we had been envisioning! After removing the pickets we laid them out in a pattern on the driveway and realized it would work perfectly. The wood had an awesome patina on it, but it was dirty and had green mold on it so we scrubbed, sanitized, sanded and sealed each and every piece of wood.

The next challenge was attaching the wood pieces to the wall and adding light fixtures without hiring an electrician to do major electrical work. My brilliant husband came up with the idea of building a frame on the wall and attaching the wood pickets to the frame. This allowed us to use sconce lights with a plug while hiding the cord between the headboard and the wall.
We bought these lights from Home Depot because they had the switch on the light, not the cord (if the switch was on the cord, the cord would need to be be visible).

But, just when you think you’ve thought of everything, you get smacked with another challenge. The cord came down the front of the fixture instead of the back. Fortunately, with a little rewiring to make the cord come out the back (insert genius hubby here), they worked like a charm.

Now that the headboard was built, it was time for new bedding. One of the keys to making a bed look inviting is layering. I purchased all of the bedding with the exception of the bed skirt at Home Goods. Love, love, love that store. I purchased the elastic bed skirt (3 cheers for not having to lift the mattress to attach the thing!) on Amazon.

Fortunately, I still loved most of the furniture in my bedroom. They just needed refreshing. For example, my vanity table was a cream color and didn’t have a coat of poly on top. Over the years of putting on makeup there, it was looking grungy. A darker color would do better for a makeup space and hide smudges. So, I simply (I mean painstakingly) painted each piece of furniture with chalk paint and updated the hardware.
I used an old bench from another room. I painted it and reupholstered with an old chenille bedspread (throwback to childhood!)

I had only used chalk paint once before this project. Now I feel like an expert! I used Rustoleum chalk paint and loved the results.

I did choose to replace the chair and ottoman. They were quite worn and didn’t match my vision. However, I didn’t want to lose that seating. I love to sit in that chair by the window and feel the sun come in. Fortunately, I was able to find the perfect replacement chair and ottoman at Ikea and stayed within my budget.

My windows were lacking appeal so I added curtain rods and curtains to soften the room.

I also had this old door I had found at a flea market. I love the door,  but needed something to balance it on the other side of the room. I found the giant mirror at Home Goods which balances the door and gives a full length mirror in my room!
The remaining accessories were either something I already owned or were purchased at Home Goods, Tuesday Morning or Michael’s.

In the end, I think Joanna Gaines would be proud. I was able to do a complete Master Bedroom Makeover for under $1500 and I am absolutely smitten with my new room!
