Keeping Your Furniture Safe When Moving

Guest post by Art Lopez, Founder and Owner of A&C Brothers Moving & Storage

There are plenty of things to look forward to when relocating to a new home, but packing and hauling stuff isn’t one of them. While clothes and most of your personal belongings are relatively easy to transport, moving the bigger and bulkier ones can be a challenge.

When moving furniture, you need to plan things well ahead of time if you want to make sure that they get to your new place safely and without as much as a dent. While it’s possible to move furniture on your own, you may need special moving tools and equipment to haul them out of your old house and into the new one. Hiring a reliable local mover can make the relocation process safer and more convenient.

Whether you choose to entrust the job to professional movers or go the DIY route, we have here some useful tips on how to keep your furniture safe when moving.

Avoid last-minute packing

Many people put off packing to the last minute, which isn’t a very good idea. When you’re in a rush, you’re more prone to forgetting and losing track of things, which can escalate into a moving day disaster.

Have most of your belongings organized, packed, and ready before the scheduled date. This will save you from a lot of trouble, and potential headaches come moving day.

Measure and take apart (if possible).

Also, check whether some of your larger furniture pieces can be disassembled. If they can be, take them apart, so they’re more manageable to transport.

Use proper packing materials.

Used cardboard boxes and old blankets can come in handy when packing stuff, but also consider investing in proper packing supplies. Purchasing bubble wraps, plastic stretch wraps, mattress covers, and other special packing materials may cost you a bit more, but they’ll help ensure the safety of your furniture and more valuable belongings.

Record and secure the items in the truck.

It’s going to cause you a lot of hassle if something goes missing or gets left behind. To prevent this happening to you, make a detailed inventory of your belongings – furniture, appliances, boxes, crates, etc.. If you have more time, put labels on the boxes so you won’t have to open and them one by one by the time you unload.

Aside from making a list, you have to arrange and secure the items properly as you move them inside the truck. Place the heaviest boxes on the back end and put large pieces of furniture against them for support. You may also line the floor of the truck with blankets and cardboard for added protection.

Get help from expert movers.

A lot of things can happen to your furniture as they get transported to your new home. You need to take the right measures to ensure that they get to your destination in the same condition that you loaded them.

For moving day to go as smoothly as possible, get assistance from a reputable moving company.
